Yves Saint Laurent is a French fashion design house founded by Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent. His career started at the age of 17, when he was the assistant to Christian Dior. With Dior’s death he was named head of the house, but was drafted into the army in 1960 and lost this position. After his military service ended he started his own fashion company and went on to become one of the most influential designers of the 60’s and 70’s. Known for tailored-women’s suits and the first women’s tuxedo, the company expanded to ready-to-wear fashions and sold these lines in boutiques named Rive Gauche. After this cosmetics and perfumes followed and their first fragrance Y for women was launched in 1964. From there several others followed including Rive Gauche, Opium, Paris, Baby Doll, Elle and La Nuit de L’Homme.
